Academic Teams

Mock Trial

High school students from across the State form school legal teams (Mock Trial teams) to compete in a courtroom/court case competition.  Students study and prepare their roles as lawyers or witnesses for one designated law case provided by the Illinois State Bar Association.  Each individual and their team’s performance are evaluated on the legal validity of their arguments, their knowledge of the case, their clarity of communication and their professional approach and appearance.  Real lawyers and judges serve as evaluators.  The Mock Trial team with the highest score wins. Our practices teach students the necessary techniques to compete and give opportunity to practice a variety of roles.  Thorough preparation is essential because each team, at various competitions, will have an opportunity to argue the case from both sides.

Scholastic Bowl

Scholastic Bowl is an IHSA sponsored competitive activity in which teams of 5 players square-off against one another in a head-to-head, buzzer-beating quiz bowl format similar to the popular TV game show Jeopardy. Players prepare in their favorite subject areas—science, math, social studies, literature, or fine arts.  The normal competition season spans the months of November through February, with practices beginning in early September and the IHSA state finals beginning the first week of March. Wheaton Academy fields two teams, a Varsity team as well as a Frosh/Soph team, each having up to 15 players.
