A RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST – THE BEATITUDES AS A GUIDEBOOK
WHEATON ACADEMY CHAPEL SERIES 2009-2010

The Beatitudes offer some of Jesus’s most basic and profound teachings on how we are to live as Christ followers. The implications of his words go to the very core of our hearts and desires, and set a dramatically different course for our lives than that which the world lays before us. This year, during chapel, we want to take time to think through these teachings of Christ and how they can impact high school students seeking to follow Christ.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY – Matthew 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (NIV)

You're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat. (The Message)

God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. (New Living)

We want students to begin to see how to long for the things God wants for us.  We will address the things we struggle with and long for-acceptance, addictions, and even the things the world offers.   As we refocus during “Spiritual Emphasis Week,” we want students to carefully consider how our longing for God is essential to our relationship with God. We want students to begin to understand how God fills us richly when we seek Him and allow him to “fill our lives.”

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (NIV)

You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. (The Message)

As we celebrate the month preceding Easter and Christ’s victory over death, we want to address the idea of suffering and disappointment.  We want students to consider why there is suffering and how Christ is the answer to our struggles, disappointments and tragedies.  We want students to understand the hope and comfort that we have in and through Christ even in the midst of deep pain and suffering. We also want to consider the possibilities we have to participate in healing and restoration through the pain and suffering we have experienced.

As we consider the topic of sex, dating and relationships, we want students to focus on the foundation of purity in all aspects of their lives.  We hope that students will begin to understand that our obedience gives us the opportunity to experience and see God at a deeper level, and brings richness to our relationships with those around us.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. (NIV)

You're blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God's kingdom. (The Message)

As we conclude the year, and students prepare for summer, missions trips, opportunities to interact with non-Christian friends and family, we want to encourage students to stay faithful in obedience to Christ.  This month will give us the opportunity to highlight those who face difficulties because of their commitment to Christ, as well as to equip students as they prepare to face the potential pressure and challenges of being away from the Wheaton Academy community for the summer.
