Shakespeare Experience
Laura McConkey
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women, merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts…” (As You Like It, Act II Scene 7) Such is the idea of The Shakespeare Experience—that each actor in the course will expand his/her repertoire and skill in the works of the best playwright in history. After auditions the first day, actors will be placed in a variety of scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. The scenes will be rehearsed and polished for a performance on Friday evening for parents and friends. Students will learn about a man who was not only a great writer, but actor and director as well; a man who left the stage directions of his plays built into a rhythmic code within the lines, who used poetry and prose in a deliberate and discriminating way to define characters and scenes, and whose insults are the best ever conceived! This course is for the serious theater student or lover of great literature who is comfortable on stage and familiar with basic stage direction. Students will be required to memorize lines quickly and remember blocking.
